What Is Life Skills Camp?

Life Skills Camp is a free, community-based program for students and adults in the Laurel area. Over four evenings of instruction — plus a final night of celebration — participants choose a class and spend the week building something real: a project, a habit, a skill, a plan.

This camp is for everyone. Whether your child is learning to code or crochet, your daughter is learning to understand her body, or you're an adult ready to take your next career step — there's a class here for you.

We believe skills build confidence. And confidence opens doors. Each night ends with encouragement and affirmation, because who you are matters as much as what you can do.

Camp Schedule

Instruction Nights

July 20-23
6:00-8:00 PM

Four nights of hands-on learning in your chosen class.

Presentation & Celebration Night

July 24
6:00-8:00 PM

Students and participants showcase what they built, learned, and created — then we celebrate together.

Four children lying on colorful floor mats, two with hands on their faces, one making a triangle with fingers.

Choose Your Class

Each participant selects one class for the week. Classes are designed by age group and interest. Registration fills fast — secure your spot early.

Class 1 — Coding For 4th–5th Graders
July 20–23

Students learn the fundamentals of computer programming — variables, data types, loops, functions, and more — then use Python and Pygame to build their own games from scratch. No experience needed, just curiosity. By Presentation Night, every student will have a game they built themselves.

What students walk away with: Problem-solving skills, a working game, and the confidence to say "I know how to code."

Class 2 — Money For 4th–8th Graders
July 20–21

Money is one of the most practical skills nobody teaches kids. This class changes that. Students learn the fundamentals of budgeting, how to balance an account, how to spend wisely, and how to handle money — both physically and digitally — with confidence.

What students walk away with: A real understanding of how money works and habits they can use for the rest of their lives.

Class 3 — Crochet For 4th–8th Graders
July 22–23

Students learn to crochet from scratch — how to hold a hook, create basic stitches, read simple patterns, and complete a beginner project. Every student finishes the class with a handmade item they can take home: a coaster, bookmark, or small accessory.

What students walk away with: A finished handmade project, hand-eye coordination, patience, and a skill they can keep building on.

Class 4 — Grooming & Wellness For 4th–8th Graders
July 20–21

More than appearance — this class covers personal hygiene, skincare, hair care, etiquette, and healthy daily routines alongside the deeper things: inner beauty, self-respect, integrity, and carrying yourself with confidence. Students leave with a personalized self-care routine and a stronger sense of who they are.

What students walk away with: Healthy habits, a self-care routine, and the understanding that real confidence starts from the inside out.

Class 5 — Girls' Health Open to All Ages (Led by a Licensed Mental Health Therapist)
July 20–23

This class gives girls and women a safe, honest, and empowering space to understand the four phases of the menstrual cycle and how each phase connects to emotional and physical health. The goal isn't just information — it's learning to work with your body instead of against it.

What participants walk away with: Self-awareness, a healthier relationship with their bodies, and the confidence to make informed choices every day.

Class 6 — Career Readiness Workshop For Adults
July 20–23

Whether you're job searching, considering a career change, or simply ready to show up more prepared in your professional life — this workshop was built for you. Over four evenings, participants will clarify their strengths and career goals, sharpen their resume and LinkedIn presence, practice real interview skills, and learn how to build meaningful professional relationships.

The workshop also covers personal branding, professional portfolios, leadership readiness, and building a practical career development plan — grounded in the belief that God has placed specific opportunities and callings before you, and you deserve to pursue them prepared.

What participants walk away with: Clearer direction, stronger career tools, and the confidence to step into what's next.

Is this only for church members?

Not at all. Life Skills Camp is open to anyone in the Laurel community regardless of background or faith.

Do I have to attend all four nights?

The classes are designed to build across the week, so we strongly encourage full attendance. If something comes up, just let us know ahead of time.

Who teaches the classes?

Each class is led by a qualified, vetted instructor. The Girls' Health class is led by a licensed mental health therapist. All instructors and volunteers are background-screened.

Just yourselves. All materials are provided.

Is there a waitlist?

Yes. If your preferred class is full, register on Church Center and select the waitlist option. We'll reach out if a spot opens.
